Telling Tales of Trees
September 30 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm£30
Storytelling workshop and performance with Lisa Kenwright.
The incredible Lisa Kenwright, storyteller, will be joining us in the woods at the Tortworth Forest Centre for a very special day of tales under the trees.
We will begin the day with a storytelling workshop, as Lisa shares with us the traditions that have been gifted from one generation to the next since memory began.
We then turn towards the fire for a fantastic vegetarian shared feast cooked for us before our very eyes.
And in case we are still not yet sated – we will then hear stories from Lisa while we relax under the incredible trees in the arboretum.
This is truly a one of a kind opportunity, and we are very pleased that Lisa is able to share this with us.
Join us for a day of sharing, listening, learning, and deepening our connection to nature and our place in it.
This is a women-only event.
Telling Tales of the Trees
Stories and woods seem to go together in our culture, in many of the tales that we remember there is a dark threatening forest filled with dangers and magic. There is also often a very passive girl waiting to be rescued from those dangers. However if you dig a little deeper into traditional stories you can find strong female characters using the forest of legend as a space where rules could be broken and women could find freedom and adventure.
Lisa will introduce the basic steps of finding traditional stories we can love and beginning the process of telling them out loud from memory. There will be focus on tales in the forest and the forest in tales and we will be using the wonderful background of Tortwood to support our exploration of own voices. The aim will be to give the participants the confidence to work towards sharing a tale in an informal setting with friends and family, but there will be no pressure and we will only tell a story in front of others when we are ready.
The emphasis will be on a fun exploration of tales in an informal way but the suggested outline is:
- An introduction to modern traditional storytelling and how to find stories we want to share.
- How to break a story down into its basic plot and create a tale that is our own.
- Voice play and practice telling aloud to ourselves.
- Opportunities to tell in small groups for those who feel ready.
We will be using traditional stories in the workshop, but the skills learned will also be relevant for anyone interested in telling autobiographical and original stories.
After the workshop Lisa will be sharing some of her own tales of trees and forests, based on traditional stories but crafted into something new and showing the power and relevance of this ancient craft.
